Why Does A Malaysian Harmonica Player Turn To The Blues?

Last August, among over 2000 harmonica players who showed up for the Asia-Pacific Harmonica Competition in Singapore, only a small handful were diatonic players, and fewer still musicians who played blues.  If Zhin Wong has anything to do about it, that will change.

Zhin, as we announced earlier, is starting to post instructional videos to teach players around Asia [and around the world] just how to play blues on the diatonic harmonica.

But first, there’s a question.  Why would a young Malaysian turn to the blues in the first place?  Zhin decided to address that very question before launching into actual instruction.  His answer speaks to the universality of the blues, why one finds blues musicians in almost every part of the world.

QUESTION:  Why do YOU, as someone with connections to Asia, like the blues?  Please share your thoughts.

REMINDER:  Harmonica players Brendan Power and Hari Pochang present two nights of blues harp in Bandung, Indonesia on March 12-13.  Check our previous post for details.
