VIDEO INTERVIEW: Bong Sotto

The Philippines is well-known for exporting its musicians world-wide.  Just go into any hotel bar lounge in the Middle East, and you are likely to find a Filipino band.  The same goes for cruise ships and hotel lounges around Asia.  But no one else has a history like Filipino bluesman Bong Sotto.

Bong started life as an “international” person, growing up in Argentina, where his father served as Ambassador of the Philippines.   And then in the early 1980′s, Bong moved to New Zealand to pursue his music career, mostly playing blues.  After seven years in New Zealand, Bong moved over to Melbourne, Australia in 1989, where he’s been working as a musician ever since.  The amazing part of the story is:  Bong has mostly been earning his living PLAYING BLUES.  In this interview, he tells us about it.

In addition to watching the video interview, you may wish to check out the Parrot Bar Blues Jammers website, which includes a video clip of bong from many years ago in New Zealand, plus a current photo of Bong in action on stage.  There’s one element missing:  there is no decent and recent video of Bong in performance.  We will try to correct that the next time he returns to Manila.

This is the first one-on-one video interview by Blues Asia Network.  Let us know what you think about it.  Should we do more like this?
