CK, as you know, I’m traveling right now — and i will be coming to Japan for the Japan Blues Festival in Amori on 20-21 July. Look forward to seeing you there. And shun Kikuta as well, who is one of the headliners.

It’s been almost a year since I changed my location to central east Asia of Taiwan. Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is not nearly close to the blues capital of the world Chicago, where I spent my last 21 years. Still I am seeing some positive signs of the growth of the blues here. I [...]

We welcome yet another regular contributor to Blues Asia Network. Shun Kikuta is a major blues star, residing in Chicago for over two decades before relocating back to Asia. At the same time we are publishing this article, Shun is performing at the Chicago Blues Festival with Koko Taylor’s back up band, in which Shun was featured for several years before her death. Shun performs all over Asia — in recent months he has performed in Taipei, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing and Jakarta.

It is really interesting that there is a growing blues scene in Taiwan as well. Thanks to the pioneers there to make this kind of music widely known.

I’d just like to say thanks to Shun for the article and mentioning BoPoMoFo. It’s always a sweet treat to play with Shun. His active presence on the nascent Taiwan Blues scene is shot on the arm. He’s not only teaching members of the younger generation of guitarists and imbuing in them an appreciation of the power of the Blues, but from his experience with Blues immortals like Koko Taylor, Junior Wells and many others, he’s showing us all how Blues is meant to be played – from the heart with intelligence.
      Arigato, Shun-san.

Like any other music artist from any kind of genres, the number one most important aspect is the song itself. A few people came to me asking me to manage them, but when I heard their songs, many of them cannot really show originality. As a musician, especially blues, you tell stories through your songs. [...]

Janki, your points are so very well taken. Paul Marney Leobrera of the Bleu Rascals replies to every single comment on FB that refers to him, building an intensely loyal following. In March, that really paid off when there was a poll of Yahoo about which band should represent the Philippines at the Timbre Rock and Roots Festival. His fans turned out the vote — and the Bleu Rascals opened for Keb Mo and Buddy Guy in Singapore, beating out the most popular rock bands in the Philippines to earn the invitation.

Hi Janki. That’s a great post. I agree with you. When a artist don’t believe himself, don’t believe his song how can he make his listeners amazed? It’s not possible to give a great output output until it doesn’t come from inside.

It’s always interesting to get a view from this perspective. Interesting article, I’ve never thought that so many efforts need to be made by a musician.

Thanks a lot for sharing Jankie. It is very true that an artist must be genuine in their feelings in their songs so that the fans can feel them too. Many aspiring Blues singers will benefit a lot from this post.
