BLUES ASIA TV: Episode 2.2

Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan & Indian blues harp guru Aki Kumar

*****

Lots of news and some video about blues festivals in Asia.  Unfortunately, since recording this segment, the Bangkok Blues Festival has been cancelled due to the floods.  WE DEDICATE THIS SHOW TO OUR BLUES BROTHERS IN THAILAND.

We also share some very recently created videos emanating from recording studios.  Musicians can learn from these two approaches to inexpensive video, both of which show off the music very well indeed.  We honor too the 24th anniversary of Hong Kong’s The Wanch, one of Asia’s major venues for blues [usually once or twice a week].  We follow up last episode’s busker video with another one, featuring a 14-year-old street musician.  We remind ourselves that jazz is very much a part of the blues story.  And we even witness a harmonica duel between India-born Aki Kumar and Andy Santana.

ADVANCE NOTICE:  The week of November 6, we have scheduled a special guest, Gerry Diwa, who is a blues bass player, a recording studio owner and a videographer.  He will share tips about how to get good and interesting video at low or very reasonable cost.  This is part of our effort to help musicians upgrade the quality of their online video.

PROGRAM INDEX:

0:00:00 –  Opening comments

00:02:14 – A background look at the Sydney Blues & Roots Festival, 28-30 October, plus news about other upcoming festivals.

00:15:14 — JONIVER [Philippines], caught jamming on “Don’t Need No Doctor” in a recording studio

00:26:54 – Commemorating the 24th Anniversary of The Wanch [Hong Kong], we reach back in our files to find a jam session there with Tommy Chung and Ram Cheung.

00:36:26 – In our Youth Segment, we discover 14-year-old Daniel Donato busking on the street to learn money for more guitar gear.  Look into his guitar case to see just how seccessful he is!

00:45:19 – A saxophone jazz improvisation at the All-Asia Cafe in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

00:49:45 — Klaus “Santa Klaus” Bluetner [European school teacher based in Taiwan] shares his latest studio recording, completed this month.

00:55:50 – Well, we planned to feature a video from the Taiwan Blues Bash 2010, but we miscued the computer again, and so we get to see Klaus again, in action in a Taipei mall.

01:00:27 — India-born Aki Kumar is making waves in California as the blues harp player with Tip of the Top.  Here we catch Aki having fun with another great West Coast harp player, Andy Santana.

*****

That’s again to everyone’s very positive response to the show.  Already this week we’ve made new friends and rounded up some new video to share.  If YOU have some good-quality video featuring blues with an Asian connection, share it with us.
